The modern day Oxford Volunteer Fire Co. was founded in 1929 and housed in
the old Town Office Building on Morris Street. It moved to its present location in 1962, and although it was built with the good will of
the community and the creativity of the members with mostly donated materials, technology and time have caused it to become inadequate. Of the
nine pieces of emergency apparatus, only four fit into the existing front bay. The new ladder truck will not fit in the building so an addition
and subsequent remodel of the existing firehouse has been proposed. The
cost of the renovation is approximately $1,500,000.
The Oxford Fire Company Building Fund Committee
is very pleased to announce the Building Fund has passed the
$950,000 mark! With that in mind, the committee has issued a new
interim goal of $1,000,000 by Labor Day, 2007, with a final goal of
$1,500,000 in 2008.
OFC President Rick Schmitt has informed the
committee that the final plans for the expanded firehouse have been
drawn, the contract has been awarded to Gardner Construction (who
recently completed the new Tilghman Island Fire Station), and the
only thing pending prior to construction is the approval by Talbot
County of the Stormwater Management Plan, expected within the next
few weeks. Then the shovels hit the ground, and, if all goes as
planned, by late Fall the redesigned Firehouse will have taken
shape.
We hope you continue to be excited about this
project and continue to support the efforts of our volunteers. We
will keep you posted, and hope to see you throughout the summer at
the monthly Pancake Breakfasts (all proceeds of which go directly to
the Building Fund). If you have any questions, or would be
interested in hosting a neighborhood get-together to drum up some
additional support, please contact either Sandy Hale, sandrahal1@msn.com
, or Al Smith, alsmith@goeaston.net.
Again, thank you for your support.
